The New Tunisian Crochet, Contemporary Designs from Time-Honored Traditions by Dora Ohrenstein is a new Tunisian/Afghan crochet book with some great added features.Since I am very familiar with Tunisian or Afghan Crochet, I took the book to our Fiber Fun meeting. Most of those involved are new to crocheting so they had never heard of Tunisian or Afghan Crochet. Each member looked though the book with interest. Most felt it's an interesting technique that makes crocheting appear as knitted fabric and would like to try the technique. They especially liked the projects presented for beginners didn't look like "beginner's" projects. The Natalia Scarf by Ms. Ohrenstein on page 116 gave them the opportunity to practice some of the basic stitches yet allowed them to create a very complicated-looking, fashionable scarf. The Ariadne Sampler Throw by Lisa Daehlin on page 104 also offered them a way to learn numerous stitches while creating a lovely, practical item. The most popular vote went to Doris Chan's Shantay Skirt on page 90. Everyone wanted to make that skirt - after they've lost a few pounds, of course. Some would need a little help with the more advanced projects, but that is why our group meets - to help each other learn a new fiber technique. I definitely think Tunisian or Afghan Crochet is a great crochet technique to learn and Ms. Ohrenstien's book presented it with some very helpful items. These include a symbol key for each stitch and charts using these symbols to show each row's forward and return stitches - very beneficial to new as well as experienced Tunisian crocheters.
