For starters, this item is really cute, that's why I bought it. It is 100% cotton, but feels much stiffer - a little like hemp. . I'm hoping a rinse with a bit of fabric softener will make it softer for a small baby and also allow it to be stretched a little while damp. I have seen a similar product that is lined with a soft cotton knit, which is better because the clip on the flower is between the lining and the knitted cap, so the metal doesn't come in contact with the baby's scalp.This is very reasonably priced, so even if is only used for photo purposes, it is well worth it..
