The clothes are made separately. The knitted bears are done in garter stitch, and are knitted on US 3 needles in DK weight yarn. The crocheted bears use single crochet stitch, and are crocheted with a US B-1 hook in no. 5 or no. 3 crochet cotton or, alternatively, in fine fingering yarn. Because this book has such a wide variety of different looks and themes for simple-to-make toy bears, I rate it at 5 stars.
